Class: 4th Science.
* Plants - Food Production *
* Green plants are the main source of food for all living beings.
* In the absence of leaves in desert plants their stems make their food.
* Being non-green in colour the leaves of moulds and mushroom cannot make food.
* Plants make their food in form of fruit sugar, sugarcane's sugar, starch and cellulose.
* Food helps the plants to grow and repair of their damages.
* Veins enable leaf to distribute water and food within the leaf.
* Stomata help in the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen. They also give out water vapour. [For-Q1.]
* Water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and chlorophyll are necessary for the process of photosynthesis. [For Q3]
* Photosynthesis is a process by which green plants make their own food.
* Some unique plants such as mushrooms and Fungi do not have chlorophyll.
* Plants and animals are equally important for each other.

2. Oxygen is absorbed during photosynthesis. False [×]
3. Lamina is the tip of a leaf opposite to petiole. False [×]
4. Synthesis means putting together.
True [✓]

D. Match the following:
1. Penetrating roots (iv) Dodder plants
2. A desert plant
(iii) Cactus
3. Extra food in plant
(i) Starch
4. A green pigment
(v) Chlorophyll
5. A process of food synthesis in plants
(ii) Photosynthesis

E. Answer the following questions:

1. What is the role of stomata in the leaf?
Ans: During photosynthesis, a leaf takes in carbon dioxide and water, and gives out oxygen along with water vapour through stomator.
----------------------*----------------------
2. What is petiole?
Ans: The stalk that connects the leaf to the plant is called petiole.
----------------------*----------------------
3. What does a plant require to make food?
Ans: In the process of preparing food, plants need carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and green pigment.
----------------------*----------------------
4. How do the following plants get their food? Mushroom, Dodder, Cactus.

(i) Mushroom: 🍄 gets food from the dead and decaying plants and animals.

(ii) Dodder: plants like dodder are not able to prepare their own food. they are dependent on other green plants. they have a special roots which penetrate into the host plant for their food. The food is generally stored in the stems or the roots of the dodder plant.

(iii)Cactus:🌵Leaves of cactus plant get reduced to spines or thorns. Therefore, their stem contains chlorophyll. The process of photosynthesis takes place in their stem. Storage of food also occurs in their stem. Generally, cactus is available in the
 absence of water, cactuş uses the food stored in fleshy stems for its growth and survival.
----------------------*----------------------
5. What do you know by interdependence of plants and animals?
Ans: Plants breathe out oxygen which is used by human beings and animals. Plants give food in form of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains. In turn, animals breathe out carbon dioxide which is used by the plants to prepare food. When animals die, their dead cells remains mix in the soil and form important nutrients for the plants.
----------------------*----------------------
6. Name the green pigment in the leaf.
Ans: Chlorophyll.
----------------------*----------------------
7. What is leaf apex?
Ans: The tip of a leaf opposite to the petiole is called an apex.
----------------------*----------------------
8. Write the names of any two unusual plants.
Ans: Croton, dodder.
